I've been a regular at Yanagiya for a long time, though I only visit once or twice a year now. However, I can't miss the summer visit in July. The grilled sweetfish (ayu) is incredibly tender, with just the right amount of moisture flowing from it, making it absolutely delicious. While the quality of the fish can vary by day, I can always count on finding excellent ayu. This time, I had ayu from the Masuda River, and its delightful bitterness was irresistible. I'm also happy to see eel on the menu. One of the charms of Yanagiya is its wine selection. They offer great wines at nearly cost price, allowing you to enjoy high-quality wine at a reasonable cost.◆ Appetizers: Snow peas, simmered venison with fuki miso, fuki and mukago, garlic chives, cucumber, eggplant ohitashi, sweet vinegar pickled radish◆ He-bo (a type of fish)◆ Grilled yamame (mountain trout)◆ Ayu from the Masuda River◆ Sliced pheasant◆ Tempura Quail kara-age, venison tataki, wild boar meatballs, potatoes, myoga, Gujo ayu, young corn, bracken and spinach ohitashi◆ Grilled eel◆ Wild young ayu from the Yahagi River◆ Summer venison tenderloin◆ Summer venison loin◆ Grilled eel from the Yahagi River◆ Ayu and garlic chive rice◆ Clam miso soup◆ Warabi mochi (bracken starch cake)Next time, I plan to visit in early December to enjoy some delicious bear meat.
