I had been wanting to visit Tonkatsu Mange again for a while, and it has become increasingly popular. Now, if you want to eat there for lunch, you have to arrive by 8:30 AM to write your name on the board, and I heard that on weekends, even arriving at that time might not guarantee you a spot for lunch. I had almost given up, but since the restaurant is celebrating its 30th anniversary and was featured on local TV, I became curious about the foie gras tonkatsu they showcased. So, I decided to stay nearby the night before and visit.I managed to catch a train and arrived in front of the restaurant around 7:20 AM, but I was still the fourth in line. By 8:30 AM, the queue had grown to nearly 20 people, so arriving early was definitely the right choice. I wrote my name, the number of people, and my phone number on a piece of paper inside the restaurant, and the staff asked me to return five minutes before the opening at 11 AM.Fortunately, my hotel check-out time was at noon, so I went back to the hotel and returned to the restaurant five minutes before opening. The interior only accommodates about ten people. The family in front of me had three members, so I was seated sixth. The menu had already been distributed, and I pondered over what to order. I decided to try the foie gras tonkatsu as a half portion a la carte, and I also wanted to sample various types, so I opted for the special half-and-half set with either the special hire tonkatsu or the Tokyo-X and Himuro pork. Having previously tried both at another restaurant in Tokyo, I chose the more expensive Himuro pork this time.I also ordered a set meal that included rice, a vegetable salad, and miso soup. I opted for white truffle salt and the original sauce. The vegetable salad was served first, followed by the foie gras tonkatsu. I took a bite, and as the name suggests, it was wrapped in foie gras, delivering an indescribable deliciousness.Next came the Himuro pork, which was a thick cut of tonkatsu. I was advised to try it without any condiments first, and then with salt. The meat quality was outstanding, perfectly fried, and the harmony of flavors was exquisite. I can't recall the taste from 13 years ago, but it was certainly impressive. The original sauce was tasty, but personally, I found the white truffle salt to be exceptional. Then, the special hire tonkatsu arrived, which I hadn’t been able to try before. This one was even thicker, and the meat quality and frying were remarkable.I usually don’t ask for a rice refill, but since it was complimentary, I couldn’t resist. Maintaining this level of quality for 30 years is no easy feat. The owner-chef, known for his signature dishes, seemed to be quite familiar with the family in front of me, sharing stories from before they got married. For payment, you can choose cash, card, or PayPay, and I opted for a credit card this time. There is parking available, so I could drive from home, but I’m not sure when I’ll return next. However, it remains the best tonkatsu I’ve ever had.
