I decided to go back to faith even at the age of sixty. It was a decision years in the making, to learn how to read the Quran, a decision that I only had the courage to make. The journey was not always a joyful one but it was an illuminating journey that I won’t forget my whole life.
This process started with the Basic Qaida, the initial step towards reading the Quran. This was the first aspect and it was very important for the overall foundation in learning. Initially, the use of the Arabic’s text appeared quite complex. These strange characters were quite dissimilar to the Urdu or even the English alphabets and as I tried to focus on them, they appeared to whirl before my eyes. Every lesson was a challenge, and it meant a lot of focus and hard work. In some cases, I got confused with the pronunciation of the words, the formation of the letters and the contours of the Arabic language.
