In the heart of Izmir lies the historic Kemeraltı, one of the oldest bazaars in Turkey. We were recommended by one of the locals to stop by KUYUM PİDE Salonu, a famous hole-in-the-wall inside the maze-like market that opened its doors in 1968. It's our first time having proper Pide, which is similar to pizza but with Turkish flair and originated back during the Ottoman times. Forget tomato sauce, mozzarella and basil: this is about the seductively bright flavors of Middle Eastern food. Think fragrant lamb, pungent black pepper, tender spinach and Turkey’s famed peynir cheese. Thin and crispy, the Pide here was delicious!
