An overdue return visit to my favorite pizza restaurant in Washington, DC for their inaugural Big Nonna’s Sunday Supper. By declaring “inaugural”, I hope @boogyandpeel will repeat this offering in 2025. Because this dinner demonstrated that Chef/Owner @jrjennings is one hell of a respectable chef, a fact not necessarily evident if one stereotypes the establishment as just another neighborhood pie joint. Despite her culinary chops, Chef Rachael doesn’t take herself too seriously. When not slinging awesome pizzas, salads, and sandwiches, she’s tossing out zingers on the restaurant’s Instagram, covering everything from BTS video bloopers to kitchen mishaps. She’s as ready to poke fun of herself as she does insufferable fools who leave outlandish reviews to complain that an LGBTQ woman-owned place is, well, too LGBTQ friendly (despite a prominent Pride flag in the window warning intolerant cretins in advance should they decide to enter) 🏳️‍🌈

But on the quality of food, Rachael certainly is all business, especially if someone’s Italian grandma’s reputation is at stake. So, you get a criminally undercharged ($50!) meal which starts with crispy banana pepper rings as vegetarian “calamari” followed by a perfectly dressed Caesar salad, focaccia garlic bread, and two delicious pastas cooked perfectly al dente. All that comes before Chef Joshua Dean takes you to gustatory climax with an eye-rolling, next-best-thing-to-sex tiramisu to finish. After dessert, you should be happily exhausted and in no condition for round 2—if a second round is your normal routine in the sheets at home. And what’s better than a post-coitus cigarette? They send you smiling out the door with a paper bag of warm zeppole 🇮🇹🍩

So, Chef Rachael, come the new year, can we get some more pasta even if it means no pizza for one evening?! But whatever your culinary inclinations, just keep doing you, witty jokes, skits, and all. Your people will keep showing up 😃
