しばしばピッツァなのか、ピザなのか議論になります。
ざっくり、前者がイタリア発、後者がアメリカ発と考えれば良いでしょう。なので、ドミノピザやピザハットなどアメリカ生まれのチェーンのものは、ピザと呼ぶのが通例。逆に、店舗内に石窯を構え、ピッツァイオーロと呼ばれる職人が腕を振ったのがピッツァ。必然的に、ピッツァは名店、ピザはチェーンのような印象になってしまいます。
だが、ピザの名店もしっかり存在しております。それが1968年に代々木でオープンし、現在は吉祥寺にある老舗ピザ屋『トニーズピザ （TONY's PIZZA）』。８０歳を超えて未だ現役の藤原亀吉氏が創業者で、ニューヨークのピザを日本に持ち帰ったのが始まり。屋号もニューヨークのタイムズスクエアにあった「TONY’s」が由来になっているんだとか。
なので、提供するのはアメリカの中でもニューヨークスタイルのピザ。その特徴は薄皮で縁の部分をパリッと香ばしく焼き上げるのが特徴。これによって一枚単位が当たり前のピッツァと違い、スライスしたピースでの販売も見られます。トニーズピザ でもこれに倣い、ランチのセットは２ピース（1/4）ずつの提供が基本になっております。
人気メニューは「ミックス」と「フレッシュトマト」。やはりパリパリの生地に、たっぷりすぎるチーズが特徴。チーズは、オランダ産のエダム、ドイツ産のモッツァレラ、デンマーク産のマリボが使われます。人種のるつぼと呼ばれたニューヨークらしさか。ちなみに、エダムチーズは日本に輸入された最初のチーズと呼ばれており、こんなところからも歴史が伝わってまいります。それでいて、野菜のカット、特にトマトなどは日本的な印象が残るの面白い。

Visited the longstanding pizza shop "Tony's Pizza" that opened in Yoyogi in 1968 and is now located in Kichijoji. Founder Mr. Kamekichi Fujiwara, still active at over 80 years old, began the journey by bringing New York-style pizza to Japan. The name of the shop, "TONY's," originated from a place in Times Square, New York.
As a result, the establishment serves New York-style pizza, known for its thin crust and the crisp, fragrant baking of the edges. This characteristic sets it apart from the typical pizza served by the slice, and at Tony's Pizza, they follow suit by offering lunch sets with two slices (1/4 of a whole pizza) as the standard.
The popular menu items are the "Mix" and "Fresh Tomato" pizzas. The crispy crust and abundant cheese are notable features. The cheese selection includes Edam from the Netherlands, Mozzarella from Germany, and Maribo from Denmark, reflecting the multicultural essence of New York. Interestingly, Edam cheese is recognized as the first cheese imported to Japan, adding a historical touch to the experience. Despite this, the vegetable cuts, especially the tomatoes, maintain a distinctly Japanese impression.
