In Kyoto City, you can enjoy authentic Kyoto cuisine at Oryori Hayashi, a restaurant housed in a renovated traditional building that values its heritage. This time, since the counter was fully booked, we were provided with a private room on the second floor. The owner prefers to keep the explanations of the dishes brief, encouraging guests to imagine the ingredients used. However, I managed to gather the following details about today’s lunch menu from the hostess:We started with a jelly made from Akoudai fish served on ice. Next was a beautifully arranged hassun featuring ingredients like amber ginger, taro, yuba wrapped in burdock, and konnyaku.Following that were deep-fried pieces of hamo (pike eel) bones, and in the soup, we had shrimp shinjo (fish cake) paired with fragrant shiitake mushrooms! Then came the sashimi and eggplant with sesame sauce, and before the meal concluded, we enjoyed refreshing kuzumomen (kuzu noodles), perfect for this season. The private room seems great for families with children or business meetings. I look forward to visiting again and sitting at the counter next time.
