Chisou Nishi Kenichi is a French innovative restaurant located in a residential area of Yaizu, a bit away from Nishi Yaizu Station. It features "Suruga Cuisine," utilizing seafood from Suruga Bay and local ingredients. I visited on May 9th, and the calm atmosphere with all counter seating made for a very pleasant dining experience. One standout dish was the fried Ebodai (Japanese butterfish). The lightly fried fish paired beautifully with the saltiness of homemade karasumi (dried mullet roe) and the sweetness of colorful tomatoes. The squid was served with snap peas and jelly, creating a lovely contrast of sweetness and texture. The marinated horse mackerel was refreshing, enhanced by red onion, sansho pepper, and seafood broth, allowing the umami of the fish to shine through. The fried sweet sea bream had a wonderful aroma from the crispy scales and a fluffy texture, perfectly complemented by the turnip puree and wasabi oil.The steamed flatfish dish featured a puree of Kita Akari potatoes, semi-dried Shizuoka tomatoes, roasted nuts, and shrimp bisque, adding depth to the gentle umami of the fish. The pan-seared red snapper was expertly cooked, accompanied by a sauce made from kinome (young leaves of the sansho tree) and white asparagus, adding a seasonal touch. The shirasu (whitebait) wrapped in pastry was aromatic with pepper, onion, shiso leaves, and cream, providing a satisfying specialty experience. The lobster risotto was a delightful dish, showcasing the textures of barley and brown rice, the richness of miso, and the crispiness of fried kale. The detailed explanations of the dishes and the meticulous presentation visible from the counter added to the charm of the restaurant. This place gives you a solid reason to visit Yaizu, and I highly recommend it to anyone who loves seafood. I look forward to returning in a different season, as it was a highly satisfying experience.
