I visited the renowned "Tonkatsu Narikura" in Asagaya. The tonkatsu here is completely different from the typical "golden brown, crispy fried tonkatsu" you might expect. What stands out first is the white coating, which is cooked slowly at a low temperature. Its elegant appearance sets it apart from the usual tonkatsu that emphasizes a savory, crunchy texture. The coating is delicate, soft, and has a gentle mouthfeel. This allows the moistness of the pork and the sweetness of the fat to shine through beautifully. The cooking technique is meticulous, resulting in tender and juicy pork. With each bite, the rich flavor of the meat gradually spreads, making it a tonkatsu that doesn’t feel heavy. Personally, I recommend enjoying it with salt rather than sauce. A touch of salt enhances the natural sweetness of the pork and the aroma of the fat, complementing the mild flavor of the white coating. This way of eating truly captures the essence of Narikura.Rather than a typical hearty fried dish, it gives the impression of a carefully prepared pork dish. It was a memorable plate worth the trip to Asagaya.
