I finally visited the long-awaited Ishiusuhiki Soba Kobo Yama no Mi.Nestled in the mountains of North Shiga Kogen, it’s not the easiest place to access, yet it’s a popular spot that makes you want to go there. This time, I made a reservation before my visit. The interior has a calm atmosphere that reflects its mountain surroundings. Enjoying soba while gazing at the greenery outside the window adds a touch of the extraordinary to the experience. The star of the show, the soba, has a delightful aroma characteristic of stone-ground noodles. The flavor of the buckwheat is rich and well-defined, and the texture is smooth going down. It’s the kind of soba that you want to savor on its own, without any dipping sauce. What impressed me even more was the "Hand-Pulled Soba Cake." Simple yet comforting, it has a pleasant nuttiness and a gentle texture that evokes a sense of nostalgia, enhanced by the warmth of being enjoyed in the mountains. The "Soba Pizza" was also a unique dish. The toasted flavor of the soba crust paired surprisingly well with the richness of the cheese, creating a light yet satisfying meal. It was playful yet executed with high quality. Moreover, the charm of Yama no Mi goes beyond just the soba. The combination of the food and the location creates a delightful experience that makes you forget you’ve traveled all the way into the mountains just to eat.Although it’s a bit of a drive from Niigata, it’s definitely worth the trip. If I have the chance to visit the North Shiga area again, I would love to return to this place. It was a great meal.
