I took a summer vacation and traveled to Gifu. On the second night, I stayed at a ryokan along the Nagara River. I had made a reservation for dinner at a restaurant in Gifu city. Just telling the taxi driver the name of the restaurant made it clear that it is quite famous in the area. There was already a group waiting at the entrance before opening, and we were let in right at 5:30 PM. I had reserved a water-boiled chicken course but wanted to order a la carte as well. I had asked about this in advance on Tabelog, but received no response before the day of my visit. When I checked with the staff, they informed me that I could order a la carte after finishing the course. There was no apology for the lack of prior communication. As for the yakitori, it was truly delicious, indicating that they handle their ingredients well. The texture was firm yet tender, with just the right amount of fat. The wasabi-topped grilled chicken, fluffy negima (chicken and green onion skewers), and crispy, flavorful tulip-shaped kara-age (fried chicken) were all excellent. The white, cloudy broth of the water-boiled chicken was rich and free of any unpleasant odors. The thigh meat was juicy, while the breast meat was light and moist. You could really feel the chef's dedication. However, the poor service and slow food delivery were very disappointing. The staff struggled with polite language, and I noticed them drinking beer with customers at the grill. That certainly doesn’t help with cooking the yakitori. Given how delicious the food was, the contrast in my overall experience was quite significant. Even though it’s a local spot, I might not be able to recommend it to acquaintances.
