In Tokyo, there are countless restaurants that leave a lasting impression, but in my hometown of Kanagawa, there are only one or two worth mentioning. At the top of that list is Unagi Tei Tomoei. I've been coming here for about 15 years, regardless of how often I visit. It’s my number one choice for unaju (grilled eel over rice). From the very beginning, I thought, "I don’t want to move away from here because I wouldn’t be able to go to Tomoei" (laughs). As usual, I made a reservation a few days in advance to secure my eel, and of course, I ordered… ■ Unaju It’s no surprise that the portion size is extraordinary! (laughs) What makes this place unique is the perfectly steamed eel that is fluffy and tender. The rice is cooked to a firmer texture, topped with a rich, sweet-savory sauce. In other words, it’s a harmonious trio of eel, rice, and sauce! That’s why the satisfaction level is off the charts! Additionally, the service at Tomoei is outstanding! Even with the high price of JPY 8,000 for unaju and the inevitable long wait, guests still flock here. Unagi Tei Tomoei is truly a one-of-a-kind eel restaurant.
