Hakata Ippudo was launched in 1985 by Shegimi Kawahara. The number of branches gradually expanded across Japan, and today Ippudo ranks as one of the best known ramen chain brands worldwide. Roughly 50 branches can be found in the Tokyo area alone; including greater Japan and overseas, the total number of branches now reaches well into the hundreds.
